Great Briton

13 January 2009 by Hystrix One Comment

This week’s pick for Great Briton is Kate Winslet.*

Born: Oct. 5, 1975, in Reading, Berkshire, England

Recent projects: Currently starring in both The Reader and Revolutionary Road (both of which won her a Golden Globe this week).

Why she is great: I’ve actually been meaning to choose Kate Winslet for a while now, and given that she just won two Golden Globes I’d say it’s time to shine the spotlight her way. I was having trouble expressing what it is that makes Winslet so awesome, so I asked some friends for their thoughts. Winslet is great because, said one, “She is beautiful and body-positive. She’s an amazing actress and I can’t think of a single bad performance she’s ever given. She is universally loved.” Frank expressed the Winslet appeal thusly: “She *still* seems a bit gobsmacked by how popular she is. She’s refreshingly frank, without being tactless, blunt, or offensive. She seems genuinely happy. She seems exceptionally comfortable in her own skin.” And as Ceylon added, she is really quite pretty. In fact, Winslet is one of those women who I would kill to look like—and yet I don’t hate her at all, which in the world of women is saying quite a lot. So, from those of us here at Echidna: Congrats on your Golden Globe wins, Kate! They couldn’t have gone to a lovelier person.

*Everybody loves Kate Winslet. But Ceylon and Quill want it known that they still voted for David Tennant.

Many congrats to Kate Winslet for her awards!

I completely agree with all of the reasons above. She’s very much a normal person - well as normal as one can be in that profession with the level of celebrity she has - and it’s refreshing.

She’s a marvelous actress and I cannot wait to see those movies! I saw her on Oprah a couple of days ago, I’m guessing a day or two after she won the golden globes - and she was great on the show!
